Since forever, good clothes have made me like films more—the way they transform characters into rich, multidimensional beings and reveal secretive nuances and emotions. I remember first falling in love with a character because of her outfit—Liesl in The Sound of Music, and this perfect pink dress.
Silvery, a weekly dispatch, explores just this—how a film’s sartorial choices shape how it is received. And, because I am a True Millennial™️, I don’t want to keep my delight for the quasi-Elizabethan neckline in The Eyes of Laura Mars, those orange pants in I Am Love, or the poolside coquettishness in La Piscine to myself.
The plan is to profile a film each Friday and highlight some of my favorite styling moments—wardrobe intricacies and mise en scène. I’ll add links so you can watch the film. Spoiler: mainly Criterion Channel. I’ll also include shoppable picks for similar (mainly vintage) styles.
Thank you for being here. I think this will be fun <3
PS: Did you know that during the black-and-white era, screens were actually silver to enhance the greyscale rendition of movies? I didn’t! But that explains the name of this newsletter.
